ART DIRECTION / DESIGN / ANIMATION
Through the magnifying lens of newspaper headlines from the 60's and 70's, I designed and animated the main title sequence for a speculative documentary film chronicling the life and presidency of Richard Nixon.
For the main title sequence, I wanted to convey a sense of introspection on a turbulent presidency, and capture the tangible feeling of photocopy and newspapers. The period of Richard Nixon's presidency was during the time that the US population started to mass adopt color TV. To this end, it felt appropriate to start the sequence in mostly black and white and gradually reveal more color as the sequence progresses. For the colors, I looked at oxidized newspapers from the era (1960's and 70's), and studied the texture of print ink. The red color of the Republican party serves as a tertiary color to complement the tone of an elderly statesman looking back on his time.
Richard Nixon was known to write copious amounts of meeting notes. Therefore, a key element of the design was having his original handwritten notes traveling throughout the frames.
